Secrets of Inspiring Leadership February 2006
Issue 1, Volume 2

Greetings!

Medevial music describes green as the color of love. While there is much history behind the color green in different eras, I identify with green as the color of hope and renewal. With St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th, may you continue re-inventing yourself and your business. “May good luck be with you wherever you go and your blessings outnumber the shamrocks you grow!”

All the best,
Lisa Marie Platske, President

    The Luck of the Irish

For most of my life, I looked forward to two things happening every March – college basketball (i.e. March Madness) and Saint Patrick’s Day. As I explained in my last newsletter, my grandfather, John Galgon, wanted grandsons and so my sister and I had the privilege of watching every sport imaginable. When it was time for the conference tournaments, we all gathered around the television at 417 Ridge Avenue to watch the action.

However, growing up with the last name “Palansky”, you wouldn’t think St. Pat’s would bring a twinkle to my eye and a jump to my step. And, yet, Saint Patrick’s day was celebrated with great fanfare in the Galgon household. Although my grandfather didn’t have an ounce of Irish in him, he was an active member in the Hogan’s, an Irish fraternal organization. Anyone who’s ever been part of any fraternal organization understands the power which can be generated from the collective energy of many individuals and their leadership.

Parades bring excitement and, as you can imagine, the Hogan’s were the lifeblood of the annual Saint Patrick’s day parade in Allentown, PA. Because my grandparent’s house was at the end of the parade route, on parade day, the door was left open and 100’s of people would meander in and out of 417 Ridge Avenue, not just for the green beer, but to have a conversation with my grandfather. People were drawn to him. He had an uncanny ability to develop rapport with strangers and possessed a genuine concern for every person he met.

Celebrating St. Pat’s Day yielded many life lessons for me, specifically in business and leadership. Like all great leaders, my grandfather’s influence had a powerful effect on everyone he met. He created a vision, built a team and brought out the best from people, with little or no fanfare, earning him the nickname “the quiet man”. While my grandfather possessed many talents, he not only expected excellence from those he called “friend” but from himself. For as Ray Kroc said, “The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves.”

    Did you know?
Kissed by thousands of people a year for over 500 years, the Blarney Stone, at Blarney castle, in Blarney, Ireland, gives you the "gift of gab." If you give it one kiss, you can talk a lot of "blarney" and people will still believe you! However, you’ll need to lie on your back and s-t-r-e-t-c-h way down to reach the stone.
