What’s Your Super Bowl?

Yesterday was Super Bowl Sunday which has always conjured up fond childhood memories.
Because my sister Pamela and I spent lots of time with my grandparents growing up and my grandfather always thought he’d be blessed with grandsons (which didn’t happen until much later in his life), Pamela and I watched football all day every Sunday during football season.
And, Super Bowl Sunday was almost as big as Christmas in our family .
Aunts, uncles, cousins, actually most of my family, and my grandparents friends gathered at “The Club” to eat, drink and watch the action.
In 2006, the Pittsburgh Steelers took on the Seattle Seahawks in an exciting match-up for Super Bowl XL.
While I typically root for the underdog and Seattle was making its 1st ever Super Bowl appearance, being a Pennsylvania girl, my heart lay with the Steelers and with that win (they defeated the Seahawks 21 – 10) they became the 3rd franchise to win 5 Super Bowls.
This year, Seattle was back again and faced the Denver Broncos and Peyton Manning, a 4-time MVP.
While they should have been my choice, I was rooting for the favorite.
Why?
Two words.
Peyton. Manning.
Manning is one of the most revered (and humble) quarterbacks in football. His motto is “faith, family, friends, and football” – in that order.
After he was drafted by the NFL, he started a charity, the Peyback Foundation, to help disadvantaged kids in Louisiana (where he grew up), Tennessee (where he went to college), and Indiana (where he played football for years and raised his family).
Business sense tells us that everything rises and falls on leadership…creating commitment, developing a clear vision, building a team, bringing out the best in others – and modeling your expectations with your actions.
Great leaders takes us to a new places…..places we didn’t know we could go.
As Alan Keith of Lucas Digital said, “Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen.”
Despite their Super Bowl loss, Manning’s influence has had a powerful effect on every team he’s been with. His teammates have shown that they’re better with him than without him. And, the fans willingly follow him wherever he goes.
ACTION ITEM: The Upside Challenge this week is to think about your own personal Super Bowl. As you think about your competition at work, in your field, your business, or in your area of expertise, would you come out 1st? Are you someone others believe is worth following because of your words, your actions, and your heart? What do you need to do to up level your leadership ability in 2014?
Leadership is all about influence. Who are you influencing today?
The world is made for those who stand out, not those who fit in.
