Connection Matters More Than Anything

I recently returned from a 4-day 6-Figure Speaker Training workshop.
While I’ve been speaking for 20 years, I’ve never taken any official in-person training on the subject.
Since I’m stepping up my own game and growing my business, I thought it was important to invest in my development as a speaker. (I know…I know…20 years later…LOL…I’m just proving that it’s always the right time to learn something new.)
I get glowing reviews because I’ve been in an audience enough times to recognize what great speakers do well.
My focus is always to keep the audience engaged and make the whoever is in the audience more important than my message. (And, sometimes that’s really tough…)
I’ve seen speakers bomb when they focus on what they want to share more than remembering they are there to serve.
The training from this weekend centered around the core message that connection matters more than anything.
And, that’s true for everything in life.
In my 3rd book, Connection: The New Currency, I wrote about the power of authentic connection
If you spend more energy on trying to be interesting to others versus spending your efforts on being interested in others, your world will stop expanding.
I call it the 51/49 rule.
In order to be a master connector, it’s all about spending at least 51% of your time and effort on being interested. Genuinely interested.Connection: The New Currency
- Listening.
- Being curious.
- Choosing to notice all that’s going on around you.
And, it’s really that simple.
We’re all busy – and sometimes so busy that we forget to pause and just connect.
Ask yourself, “Do you show up in service and support of others in your work solely expecting to get something back?”
Is your message more important than the connection?
Or, do you regularly show up to life fully open for the possibilities that grow from shared giving and receiving with every person you come into contact with?
Regardless of what’s going on around you, choose to be the change you want to see in the world.
ACTION ITEM: The Upside Challenge for the week is to spend 5 minutes a day each day this week to take inventory about how connected you were. In the morning, just 2 ½ minutes identifying how and where you want to connect. And, 2 ½ minutes at the end of the day – before going to bed – asking yourself just 2 simple questions, “How did I do today?”, and “Did I show up as the best version of me — the change I want to see in the world?”
Connection matters more than anything!
