Leadership Matters!

Leadership matters.
If you’ve ever had the chance to work for a great leader, you know what I’m talking about.
If you’ve ever had the chance to work with a lousy leader, you also know what I’m talking about.
Leadership is influence, nothing more and nothing less.
The person who is influenced takes action because he/she wants to do something, not because you told them to do it.
And, if you want to be a leader, you need to be someone worth following.
To be someone worth following, it’s important to see the life through the eyes of others.
I call it the Platinum Rule: Do unto others as they would like to have done unto them.

Viewing the world from this perspective enables you to recognize that we all have different lenses in which we see the world through based on our differing experiences and background.
The way we filter what we see colors what we see and how we react to it. It drives what we perceive and believe.
In order to see the world through the eyes of the people they are called to lead, great leaders have learned to ask great questions – and actively listen to what is being said.
For example,
What is important to you?
What actions do you believe are most important to take in this situation?
What do you want to have happen today?
Asking great questions and active and intentional listening are also skills linked to emotional intelligence mastery.
ACTION ITEM: The Upside Challenge of the week is for you to think about someone you consider to be a great leader. What do they do or say that makes them a great leader? What traits do they possess that make them great?
