Lessons To Learn From Waking Up Early & My Mom

Being a single parent and working as a nurse, my mother had a morning ritual to get to work on time.
Because she was responsible for not only getting herself to work but getting my sister and I to school, she would put on the hallway light to let us know it was time to get up and moving.
Since my Catholic grade school was within walking distance of my grandparents, my Mom would wake us up, have us meet her downstairs and then drive us to their home on the other side of town where we would get fully ready for the day ahead.
At the time, I didn’t think much of what we were doing.
The situation necessitated us waking up 3+ hours before school started so my Mom could make it to work on time.
But, this early morning habit served me well into college and my work years.
Recently, I read an article about the success habits of great leaders.
One of these is getting an early start to your day.
Here are 3 tips on how to ensure that you make the most out of your morning rituals:
- Create a Morning Ritual. Whether it’s prayer, meditation, or journaling, build a practice of sameness that best support you in preparing for the day ahead.
- Get Moving! Studies show that exercise increases your effectiveness. After sleeping for 6, 7, or 8 hours, your body needs to get into motion to wake up your mind.
- Set a Power Hour. Imagine if you set aside time every day to focus on your most important priorities! Research shows you would accomplish more in one hour of undistracted time than in three hours of multi-tasking!

The Upside Challenge of the week is to make the commitment to start your day early. Use one of the three tips to begin.
