How To Be a Leader Worth Following – Three Principles

When I decided to start my business, I wanted to figure out what worked and how to be a leader. Here’re the 3 principles that I apply.
Research shows that half of new companies in the United States fail within the first 5 years of opening their doors.
Starting a business takes courage as 50% of the people out there expect you to fail.
When I began interviewing people who were already successful business leaders, I wanted to figure out what they were doing that worked and didn’t.
This is how my 7 Pillars of Leadership that serve as the curriculum for Design Your Destiny Live™ were created.
This past year, when I celebrated my 11th anniversary, one of my colleagues asked me over lunch if I ever thought that I would still be doing what I’m doing, running my business and hosting my annual event 9 years later.
Many of my colleagues have closed their doors to get jobs in corporate America or moved their business in a different direction.
How To Be A Leader
When I thought about the elements that have kept me on course in Upside Thinking, I identified three principles that have served me well in business and life:
- Faith: Have faith. I’ve often said that if I knew then what I know now, I never would have opened my business. The daily surprises, risks, and stresses that challenge your inner resolve make running a business without faith impossible. Every time you step into your brilliance and push the fear beside you, you’ve said “YES!” to the people who need you most. If you don’t believe that you are providing an incredible service to the world, why are you doing what you’re doing?!?
- Generosity: Be generous. Jim and I live our life choosing to share our abundance with family and friends. My assistant Sheri knows that one of my personal mantras is to lead with generosity. Whenever making a decision for Upside Thinking, Inc., Sheri understands that I believe we can never be too generous. When dealing with coaching clients or people who attend Upside Thinking events, it’s more than giving them the best possible exchange for their money. It’s about being generous with our heart – choosing to show kindness and lead with love.
- Goodness: Do good. This first starts with you. You have to be willing to do good by yourself for yourself. You have to believe that you deserve success and the good things that come with it. Then, you have to do good by your employees, colleagues, and clients. Doing good is more than doing nice things for the people in your business and life. It means owning your mistakes when you make them and taking full responsibility for your decisions and actions. On the last day of my “Seize Your Spotlight” retreat I publicly apologized to all of the attendees for something I said the day prior. It wasn’t how I had planned to start the morning on the final day, however, after thinking about a comment I made on day #2, I knew I needed to speak up and shine a light on the words I used, not knowing who I may have offended. While I did my best not to cry, I was unsuccessful – and perhaps more embarrassed. The pain and embarrassment I felt were less important than my commitment to do good and honor the clients that need me and my brilliance – which includes my humanity.
Action Item:
The Upside Challenge of the week is to have faith, be generous, and do good. Choose to take one intentional action in each element and notice what shows up for you.
Choose to be a leader worth following because…..
…….The world needs you and your brilliance.
