How Strong is Your Perseverance Muscle?

Moving from tragedy to triumph isn’t for the faint of heart. A strong perseverance muscle is key to success – how strong is yours?
“Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air.” ~John Quincy Adams~
Perseverance.
- A noun defined as “steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success” which often partners with the word “courage.”
Every month, I deliver presentations on what it takes to be a leader worth following to different organizations.
Recently, I was asked to craft a talk on courageous leadership and how to master the art of perseverance.
Very few people get a charmed life, free from struggles and obstacles.
Ups and downs, difficulties and hardships are simply part of life’s journey.
You don’t get to be a leader worth following without a few battle scars.
My first leadership lessons didn’t come from a book or my studies.
They came from my life – my childhood memories and home.
The stories were all around me – family members who triumphed over tragedy.
When I look back today at the perseverance that has led me to surpass those in my industry who may have been smarter or more talented, I know that this came from watching my Mom persevere despite the odds that were stacked against her as a single Mom in the 1970’s.
During that time, I learned the difference between a necessity and a luxury – and expense and investment.
Despite countless hardships throughout her life, my mother defied the odds and persevered, creating a home that was full of love.
I was told that I could do anything I wanted – as long as it was an honest living.
But, that was only partially true – I could do anything I wanted as long as I fully lived out my potential and did whatever I wanted by using 100% of my talents, gifts, and abilities.
That was the expectation.
And, I’m a better person for it today.
How To Persevere In Life
When you watch the strong perseverance muscle people around you struggle, the lessons seep into your cells telling you stories of what is possible or not.
They leave messages in your DNA that you may not even be aware moves you to move forward or stagnate.
That’s the power of the unconscious mind.
Being a leader worth following means you will stand at the crossroads more times than you can imagine with the decision of whether to give up or keep trying.
If you don’t already know it, let me share that moving from tragedy to triumph isn’t for the faint of heart.
Perseverance takes bravery, a bit of audacity, and intentional movement.
But, that’s what courageous leaders who are worth following do.
They step up.
They stand out.
They persevere.
